The Happiest and Saddest Facts About Homecomings

I graduated high school fifty years ago and whenever there are homecomings, we could either recall the saddest or happiest moments in our life’s in addition to the miseries one already has.

Look in a particular class of fifty students, it is undeniable that not all are considered wealthy.  Thus, it is composed of students whose fathers are either farmers, fishermen, laborers, artisans, and only a few fraction thereof is  considered wealthy, whose parents can afford to send their children to school without bothering themselves of looking for good work – they are the landlord class. The rest of the students carried on their studies through the execution of promissory notes as passports for them to take the periodic examination because their parents could not right away pay their tuition and other fees.

But since education is not only for the privileged rich, but also for those who dared, many who hailed from poor families were able to achieve proper education and therefore could land on bigger salaries and achieved latter a better status in life.

So, whenever there are or there would homecomings especially high school homecomings, they are usually the leaders or the persons of interests in making the affair into a successful one. The rest just followed to where the head goes. The presence of clique in each batch is always there. So, it’s the strong influence of cliquism that determines the success of the activities. As a result many would come, however, there are those who would say to themselves that “I won”t join homecoming again.”

Though this is the sad reality, many still tried to attend homecomings in order to see rather meet their former classmates. Well, it’s good that everyone should attend to savor once more the beautiful memories they had in high schools. However, as a point of observation, homecomings should not be made as a venue where one could boastfully account the wealth or success she has or one has in life. We have classmates who today are still less fortunate in life than we are, who still carried on their living as trisikad drivers, fishermen and marginal farmers. They deserved respect. Why in the hell we are accounting our riches to them? What for? To let them know how successful we are in life while they are not. It’s really unfair. Place yourself in their toes and how sad it would be to hear such sarcasm. They are there to enjoy – to reminisce the past when you both have nothing. Why talk of your own success, just to point out how great you are than them?  It’s so unfair. Better not come if your way of thoughts run that way.  It’s so unfair.

Lastly, may the school forbid themselves from collecting exorbitant entrance fees so everyone could come and enjoy with their classmates – recall ceaseless school memories.

I think the better way homecomings could be celebrated memorably, is for us to tow away the burdens of our classmates even just for a short while during homecomings.  And the best way we can ever make during homecomings is to sow Mercy and Compassion as we pass this way only once.
